Social Security Pensions in Kerala (Panchayat Welfare Pensions)

This is a scheme implemented by the Government of Kerala through Local Self-Government Institutions (Panchayats/Municipalities/Corporations) to ensure monthly financial assistance to ordinary people with no source of income. Currently, these welfare pensions are mainly distributed under the following five categories:

  1. Old Age Pension (Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension): Provided to eligible senior citizens aged 60 years or above.
  2. Widow Pension (Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension): Financial assistance for underprivileged widows, deserted women, or divorced women.
  3. Disability Pension (Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension): Disbursed for the welfare of physically or mentally challenged individuals.
  4. Pension for Unmarried Women Above 50 Years: Intended to support financially backward women who remain unmarried past the age of 50.
  5. Agricultural Labourer Pension: Provided to former agricultural laborers who have crossed the specified age limit and have no other source of income.

Key Eligibility Criteria (General)

  • Income Limit: The annual family income of the applicant must not exceed 100,000 INR.
  • Residency: The applicant must be a permanent resident of Kerala.
  • Other Pensions: Individuals receiving other monthly pensions or benefits from the Government or various statutory boards are generally not eligible (except for certain specific exemptions).
  • Vehicles/Property: Those who own luxury vehicles (four-wheelers excluding taxis) or land holdings above a specified limit are usually not eligible for the pension.

Amount

The current basic social security pension amount is 2000 INR per month.

How to Apply

  • Eligible beneficiaries can submit applications through their respective Grama Panchayat/Municipal offices or online via Akshaya Centers.
  • Along with the application, documents such as Aadhaar card, Ration card, Income certificate, proof of age, bank passbook, and (if applicable) medical certificate or death certificate must be submitted.

The pension amount is distributed either directly into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries or delivered to their homes through cooperative banks.
