Panchayat

New MahiPanchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to carry out the administrative affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. For a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of the Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the duties in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: Committees formed to facilitate the decision-making of the Panchayat, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc.

History of Grama Panchayat

The ancient port of Kallai was a major trading center located at the mouth of the Mayyazhi River. Since exports and imports took place here, a customs house also functioned. An inscription dated 955 AD is considered to be evidence of Brahmin settlement in this area. Edannur was a major Brahmin village. Before the French arrived in Mayyazhi, there was a trading center at Kurichi. The history of this area is related to trade and political conflicts between the French and the English. Several temples and shrines, including the Parimatham Sri Durga Temple, exist in the panchayat. Although the majority of the population was Muslim, Hindu and Christian communities also lived here.
